Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Gomphonema is Gomphonema acuminatum Ehrenberg.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gomphonella transylvanica (Pantocsek) R.Jahn & N.Abarca.

Syntype localities: 'Bibarczfalva, Bodos et Köpecz in Transilvania' according to Pantocsek (1905); (Skibbe et al. 2018: 255) Lectotype: pl. 14, fig. 220, from Köpecz [832/1] by Pantocsek (1893). : NHHM-ALG-D2262 from Bibarczfalva (fig. 11) (epitype) (Skibbe et al. 2018: 255) Notes: Transylvania (freshwater Tertiary) (INA).
