Taxonomic note
Ohtsuka & Tuji (2002: 245) consider the current taxonomic status as a variety of C. turgidula to be inadequate as the two forms often coexist in the same locality but with habitat segregation. As 'Cymbella niponica' becomes a later synonym of C. nipponica Skvortzow 1936, they propose the substitute name Cymbella rheophila Ohtsuka. - (13 March 2007) - G.M. Guiry
