Type locality: Lake Biwa, Japan (Ohtsuka & Tuji 2002). Lectotype: Fig. 7 (epitype) Tamiji Kawamura; 3 November, 1915; Lake Biwa Museum, Shiga, Japan Slide 30000136 (Ohtsuka & Tuji 2002: 245, 243, fig. 7). Notes: Isolectotype (raw material): TNS-AL-53965 m (Tuji, 2007).
No synonyms are currently included in AlgaeBase.
Ohtsuka & Tuji (2002: 245) consider the current taxonomic status as a variety of C. turgidula to be inadequate as the two forms often coexist in the same locality but with habitat segregation. As 'Cymbella niponica' becomes a later synonym of C. nipponica Skvortzow 1936, they propose the substitute name Cymbella rheophila Ohtsuka. - (13 Mar 2007) - Wendy Guiry
This is a freshwater species.
This variety tends to inhabit running water or upper parts of rivers.
