Type species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.

Type locality: "A Venezia sulle pietre al Lido" (Zanardini 1847: 208).
Origin of species name
Adjective A (Latin), venice-blue [Sea coloured, Venetian blue] (Stearn 1973).
