The type species (holotype) of the genus Cystoclonium is Cystoclonium purpurascens (Hudson) K├╝tzing.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Chondrus armatus (Harvey) Okamura

Type information
Type locality: Hakodate, Hokkaido, Japan (Harvey 1857: 232). Lectotype: James Morrow; v.1854; TCD (Masuda & al. 1995: 193, fig. 3).

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), equipped, armed (Stearn 1985).
