The type species (holotype) of the genus Antithamnion is Antithamnion cruciatum (C.Agardh) Nägeli.

Type locality: Natudomari-zaki, Mutu Bay, Osyoro, Siribesi Prov., Japan (Cho, Won & Fredericq 2005/2006: 333). Type: SAP 022777 (Yoshida 1998: 875). Notes: Lectotype: original illustration fig. 1, designated by Athanasiadis (2009: figs 1-3); epitype: SAP 08203, undated, Ooshima, Mutsu Bay, leg.Y Yamada, designated by Athanasiadis (2009: figs 4-12).

Taxonomic notes
According to Athanasiadis (2009), A. nipponicum is a heterotypic synonym of A. pectinatum, and the correct name of the species currently passing under the name A. nipponicum should be A. hubbsii. - (26 Feb 2013) - Wendy Guiry

Distributional notes
Cho et al. (2006) record that the adventive plants reported by Curiel et al. (1996, 1998) as A. pectinatum from the Venice Lagoon represent this species. It was first found in first found in the Etang de Thau (France) around 1988 (Verlaque et al. 2015: 123). Further adventive populations are decribed by Cho et al. (2006) from North Carolina and from the Pacific Coast of North America (California).
