The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Savoiea bipinnata (Postels & Ruprecht) M.J.Wynne
Type information
Type locality: Kamchatka, Russia Type: LE (Yoshida 1998: 1075). Notes: Russia: "in saxis ad littora Kamtschatica" (INA).

Adjective (Latin), twice-pinnate.
