The type species (holotype) of the genus Ganonema is Ganonema farinosum (J.V.Lamouroux) K.-C.Fan & Y.-C.Wang.

Adjective (Latin), worm-shaped, almost cylindrical and bent in places, marked with irregular waves or bent lines (Stearn 1973).

Type locality: 1.5 km seaward of Media Luna Reef (17°54.771'N; 67°03.638'W), La Paguera, Puerto Rico (Ballantine & Abbott 2006: 124). Holotype: D.L. Ballantine (6393) & H. Ruiz; 12.viii.2004; 17 m . US Algal Coll. 209072 (Ballantine & Abbott 2006: 124). Notes: Isotypes in BISH and MSM.
