The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.
Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Vertebrata thuyoides (Harvey) Kuntze
Type locality: Milltown Malbay, Co. Clare, Ireland (Maggs & Hommersand 1993: 364). Lectotype: 1831; TCD (Maggs & Hommersand 1993: 364).
Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), resembling the genus Thuja (Neal 1993).
