Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Bangia is Bangia atropurpurea (Mertens ex Roth) C.Agardh.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Vittaprasiola calophylla (Carmichael ex Greville) Heesch, Guiry & Rindi.
