Type species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Bangia is Bangia atropurpurea (Mertens ex Roth) C.Agardh.

Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Prasiola calophylla (Carmichael ex Greville) Kützing

Type information
Type locality: On a block of stone near the Clergyman's house on the Island of Lismore. October (Greville 1826: pl. 220). Type: E Notes: The island of Lismore lies in Lough Linnhe east of Mull in Argyll & Bute, Scotland.

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), With beautiful leaves (Stearn 1973).
