The type species (lectotype) of the genus Conferva is Conferva rupestris Linnaeus.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Hincksia granulosa (Smith) P.C.Silva.

Syntype localities: Brighthelmston and Shoreham, Sussex, England; (Silva & al. 1996: 567) Type: W. Borrer; (Index Nominum Algarum) Notes: Womersly (1987) gives the following data: Type from England; not located (Clayton, 1974).

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), granulose (Stearn 1973).
