The type species (holotype) of the genus Leathesia is Leathesia tuberiformis S.F.Gray.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Corynophlaea crispa (Harvey) Kuckuck.

Type locality: British Isles; (Athanasiadis 1996: 151) Type: TCD?; Notes: on Chondrus crispus in the Clyde, at Cumbrae (Mr. Roger Hennedy) (INA).

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), crisped, irregularly waved and twisted (Stearn 1973).
