Nomenclatural note
Invalid: not accepted by the author. M.J. Wynne points out (e-mail, August 2006): "Turner, who based his material on a collection made by Menzies on the northwest coast of America, is often thought to have made an illegitimate name because of Hudson's (1778) Fucus herbaceus, described from Hastings in Sussex. MICH Library has that Hudson work (1778), and I can confirm what Paul Silva's INA card states, that Fucus herbaceus Huds. is on page 582, BUT on page 662, Hudson placed his own [unpublished] name in synonymy with Fucus ligulatus Lightfoot (1777). Silva's INA card states that F. herbaceus Hudson was "not validly published". So that would mean that Turner's name F. herbaceus was not an illegitimate name after all, that the authorship of Demarestia herbacea is (Turner) J.V. Lamouroux. Lamouroux did base it on the Pacific North American specimen of Turner (a Menzies collection), not a European specimen. - (15 August 2006) - G.M. Guiry
