Taxonomic notes
Investigations carried out by Remias et al. (2018) revealed that the type strain of Chloromonas rosae var. psychrophila from North America is not related to the blooms of S. cryophila K-1 in alpine snow in Europe. They note that since Sotiella is invalid for species where daughter cells have smooth walls instead of ribbed ones, and the epithet cryophila already exists in Chloromonas (Hoham & Mullet, 1977), a nomen novum for this taxon will be necessary once flagellates can be described. - (27 September 2018) - G.M. Guiry
Hoham & Mullet (1978) cite this as a synonym of Chloromonas nivalis. - (30 July 2010) - G.M. Guiry
