Type Information
Holotype locality: Whetstone Gulf State Park, NY (43.8ºN, 75.5ºW); (Hoham & al. 2006: 322) Holotype: Figs 5,6 (epitype) April 1988; 380 m elevation; in top 20 cm of melting snow banks, in partial to mostly shaded areas near hardwood and coniferous trees; snow temperature near 0ºC; pH range of snow melt at 0ºC, 5.0-5.3; (Hoham & al. 2006: 322) Notes: Holotype: figs 5, 6 from strains CU 582C/582D. Culture deposited in the Colgate University Culture cCollection, Hamilton, NY, USA.
Description
Cells oblong, 5-11 microns wide by 13-25 microns long, or spherical, 7-11 microns wide; chloroplasts parietal cup-shaped, but mostly parietal bands and disks with or without extensions that may or may not be connected to one another; eyespot and pyrenoid absent; nucleus centrally located; two apical contractile vacuoles; non-descript papilla; flagella 0.75-1.0 times cell length. V-configurations; cell packs, seldom with flagella, with two, four or rarely more oblong (infrequently spherical) daughter cells; most spherical cells derived from oblong cells. Mating pairs isogamous or anisogamous; heterothallic; planozygotes and zygotes spherical, 8-15 microns wide; zygospores green to orange in colour.
