The type species (lectotype) of the genus Penium is Penium margaritaceum Brébisson ex Ralfs.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Actinotaenium terrestre (C.-C.Jao) Y.Wei.
Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), growing on the ground or soil, as opposed to rocks or trees (Stearn 1973).
