Nomenclatural note
Nizamuddin et al. (1994: 217) re-established with an amendment the genus Poropsis Kützing as distinct from Penicillus Lamarck differently from De Toni (1889: 500) who had been erroneously treated it as synonym of Espera mediterranea Decaisne (=Penicillus capitatus). Moreover, Nizamuddin et al. (1994: 215), thinking the epithet subunalis (used by Kützing) an orthographic error for "saburralis" (used by De Notaris for his Bryopsis saburralis), concluded that the correct nomenclature of the only species of the genus Poropsis was P. saburralis (De Notaris) Kützing (bas[ionym]: Bryopsis saburralis De Notaris) Nizamuddin et al. (1994: 217). However, Kützing's epithet subunalis in the valid publication of the binomial Poropsis subunalis Kützing, can't be considered as an ortographic error of De Notaris's epithet saburralis of the binomial Bryopsis saburralis De Notaris because the above two taxa are not based on the same type (Art. 61.2 of ICN, Melbourne Code, McNeill et al., 2012). In fact, Nizamuddin et al. (1994: 217) stated that the genus Poropsis is represented by a single species having as basionym Bryopsis saburralis De Notaris. Therefore, as pointed out by Woelkerling (personal communication), Nizamuddin et al. (1994: 217) have not re-established the genus Poropsis Kützing with an amended description; instead they have created a separate genus also called Poropsis that is attributable solely to Nizamuddin et al. under Art. 48.1 of ICN., namely Poropsis Nizamuddin, El-Menifi et Godeh (1994: 217). Poropsis Nizamuddin et al. appears to be validly published under Art. 38.1 of ICN because those authors have based it on an amended description of Poropsis Kützing to which they refer on page 217 and which is effectively published. However, it is illegitimate being a later homonym of PoropsisKützing (Art. 53.1 of ICN). Consequently the correct nomenclature of Poropsis saburralis is P. saburralis (De Notaris) Nizamuddin, El-Menifi et Godeh (1994: 217) (legitimate name, according to Art. 55.1 of ICN) and not P. saburralis (De Notaris) Kützing as erroneously reported by Nizamuddin et al. (1994: 217). - (21 July 2015) - M.D. Guiry
