Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Leptolyngbya is Leptolyngbya boryana (Gomont) Anagnostidis & Komárek.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Nodosilinea nodulosa (Z.Li & J.Brand) Perkerson & Casamatta.

Holotype locality: South China Sea (114º16'E, 22º70'N); (Li & Brand 2007: 397) Holotype: March 1998; ~5 km offshore, at a depth of approximately 10 m; (Li & Brand 2007: 397) Notes: Iconotype: Figs 1-10. Holotype: Cryopreserved living culture deposited in the Culture Collection of Algae at the University of Texa at Austin (accession no. UTEX 2910).

Adjective A (Latin), with swellings, noduled, nodular, or with small nodules.

This is a marine species.
Description
With features described for the genus but different in the following characters: in its filaments distinctly flattened, composed of several hundred cylindrical cells 1.2-2.4 microns long by 1.1-1.5 microns diameter; in its discrete compact structure (nodules) variable in shape and size, occurring along the filaments, consisting of a portion of the filament folded into a tight aggregate and entirely surrounded by a distinct sheath; in its reproduction by fragmentation of trichomes at sites of necrotic cells; and in its hormogonia with trembling movements.
