Type Species
This is the type species (holotype) of the genus Verrucophora.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pseudochattonella farcimen (Eikrem, Edvardsen & J.Throndsen) Eikrem.

Type locality: The Skagerrak off Flodevigen, Norway (58º25'N, 0.8º45'E); (Edvardsen et al. 2007: 1066) Holotype: Fig. 4a: March 2001; Marine; Department of Biology, University of Oslo, Norway; TEM section embedding Vf-B07 (Edvardsen et al. 2007: 1066) Notes: Isotype: Figs 3c and 4, b-e; strain UIO 113 deposited at Department of Biology, Ubiversity of Oslo, Norway.

General Environment
This is a marine species.

Cells long, cylindrical, oval, spherical, or pear shaped, sometimes with antapical trailing cytoplasmic filament; with two apically inserted unequal flagella; long anteriorly directed flagellum carrying tripartite hairs with single terminal filament about half the length of hair; short flagellum tapering. Cells 5-50 microns and 4-17 microns wide; length of long flagellum 9-30 microns, short flagellum 2-7 microns exclusive of tapering part that measures 1.0-3.5 microns. Single, branching nucleus located in anterior part of cell. Prominent nucleolus. Basal bodies located in depression of nucleus. Microtubular roots present. Nucleotide sequences for the SSU and LSU rDNA distinct.
