Type species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Ceramium is Ceramium virgatum Roth.

Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Dasya ocellata (Grateloup) Harvey

Type information
Type locality: Sète, Hérault, France (Silva & al. 1996: 437). Lectotype: unlocalised, undated Grateloup specimen; LD 43847 (Maggs & Hommersand 1993: 275).

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), marked with two-coloured spots, having the centre of one colour surrounded by a broad ring of another (Stearn 1973).
