Taxonomic note
"Corillion (1957a) suggested that Tolypella palhinhae could possibly be a regional variant of Sphaerochara intricata (= Tolypella intricata),but T. palhinhae is here referred to Nitella because of the furcate rather than monopodial branchlets (Wood, 1965). Wood (1962; 1965) synonymised T. palhinhae with N. ornithopoda, and the decision was never disputed, but the former seems to be quite different from the latter, because it has diffuse once furcate branchlets without a central secondary segment, the first branchlet node is fertile, it has bigger gametangia that are geminate, and clustered oogonia as well as shortly stipitate antheridia. The habit of N. palhinhae is quite distinct because of the uncondensed long once-furcate branchlets. N. palhinhae is only known from the type locality. New specimens would be required for a detailed examination to confirm its species rank or merge it with another species." (Romanov 2024: 1059). - (03 April 2025) - M.D. Guiry
