The type species (lectotype) of the genus Callithamnion is Callithamnion corymbosum (Smith) Lyngbye.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gymnothamnion elegans (Schousboe ex C.Agardh) J.Agardh.

Type locality: "Ad Tintigin" [Tangier, Morocco]; (Dawson 1962: 4) Holotype: Hornemann; LD?; (Dawson 1962: 4) Notes: Dawson (1962: 4) notes that the holotype is a Hornemann collection from Herb. Schousboe, probably in the Agardh Herbarium, Lund, Sweden.
Origin of Species Name
Adjective B (Latin), elegant (Stearn 1973).
