The type species (lectotype) of the genus Callithamnion is Callithamnion corymbosum (Smith) Lyngbye.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Spermothamnion repens (Dillwyn) Magnus.

Taxonomic note
"Callithamnion abbreviatum Kützing. This species was described by Kützing (1843: 373) from the Gulf of Genoa (Italy) and later illustrated in his Tabulae Phycologicae (Kützing, 1861: 26, pl. 81/II). Hauck (1882: 44) listed it among the synonyms of Spermothamnion turneri [= S. repens]; Ardissone (1883: 300) and De Toni (1903: 1260) listed it among the synonyms of S. turneri var. variabile. Surprisingly, this species was first considered by Athanasiadis (1996: 168) as a synonym of Antithamnion cruciatum [in that followed by M.D. Guiry in Guiry & Guiry (2023)], but more recently (Athanasiadis, 2016: 1031) as a synonym of S. repens var. variabile."
