Type locality: North shore of Shackleford Banks across from Middle Marsh, Back Sound, Carteret County, North Carolina, USA (34º40.50' N, 76º36.15' W) (Hommersand & Freshwater 2009: 507). Holotype: cystocarpic plant: D.W. Freshwater; 31 July 2004; US 0209186 (Hommersand & Freshwater 2009: 507).
