The type species (holotype) of the genus Antithamnion is Antithamnion cruciatum (C.Agardh) Nägeli.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pterothamnion spinescens (Strömfelt) Athanasiadis.

Type locality: ‘Nökling insulae Bömmelön ad litus occidentale Norvegiae’ [Lyckling on the west side of Bömlo Island, Noway]; (Athanasiadis 1996: 57) Notes: Lectorype selected by Athanasiadis (1996: 57) as Strömfelt’s original illustration (pl. 3: fig. 1).

Origin of Species Name
Noun (Latin), diminutive of "pluma", a wing; plumule (Brown 1946).
