The type species (holotype) of the genus Nitzschia is Nitzschia elongata Hassal.

Type locality: River Stará voda, site above Stará voda, Slovakia (48º47'00" N, 20º40'07" E) (Hlúbiková et al. 2009: 750). Holotype: Figs 5, a-y; 7, g and h; 8, e and f; 10, gand h (epitype) Dasa Hlúbiková; April 2004; Epilithon from riffle. Hustedt Collection, Bremerhaven, Germany BRM-ZU6/41 (slide) (Hlúbiková et al. 2009: 750). Notes: Isotypes (slides): ANSP GC 14446; BM-101336; BR-4129.

Habitat notes
The species has moderate ecological plasticity when judged by the typological descriptor of rivers; it occurs in the rhithron of oligotrophic alkaline rivers, mostly on calcareous geological bedrocks, at high to middle altitudes, being sensitive to organic pollution and increase in nutrient concentrations (Hlúbiková et al. 2009: 754). - (19 Feb 2010) - Wendy Guiry
