This is a freshwater species.
After J. C. van Raam 2010: Plants dioecious, to 30 cm. high, similarn to var. gelatinifera, but fertile heads spicate and whorled, 2-4 at a node. Axes slender, to 700 u in diameter. Branchlets heteromorphic; fertil, 0.2-0.2 cm. long, compacted into dense heads; sterile, 6-8 in a whorl, 1-3 cm. long, 1-fuecate, terminated by tiny dactyls. Dactyls,fertile, 2-3 celled, end-cell blunt or acute; sterile, 2-celled, 3nd-cell acute, conical. Heads terminal or axillary, often aggregate, 1-4 at a node, 0.5-2.0 cm. long, 0.2-0.4 cm. wide; enveloped in mucus. Gametangia at fertile branchlet nodes. Oospores dark red to black, c. 338 u long and c. 305 u wide; striae of 6-7 low ridges; fossa variable, to 42 u across; membrane clearly granulate. Antheridia? Chromosome number: n=12.
