Type Species
The type species (type conserved) of the genus Chlamydomonas is Chlamydomonas reinhardtii P.A.Dangeard.
Status of Name
The taxonomic or nomenclatural status (or both) of this entity is in some way unresolved and requires further investigation.
General Environment
This is a marine species.
Description
Dominant phase in the life cycle characterized
by spherical non-motile cells 8-15 µm in
diameter. Motile cells oval (8-15 x 6-8 µm). The most
distinguishing feature of this symbiotic alga is its
pyrenoid structure which is typically penetrated by
many tubules, each with a single thylakoid stack in the
center. Pyrenoid surrounded by extensive starch
sheath. The single, large-lobed chloroplast extends
throughout all regions of the cell and with its pyrenoids
and associated starch plates occupies more than half of
the cell volume. The nucleus is an irregular spheroid situated
anteriorly in close juxtaposition to the flagellar
apparatus. The apical papillus is small. The cell wall of
cultured forms is triple-layered with: 1) a spongy inner
layer; 2) an electron dense fibrous middle layer; and
3) spongy outer layer. Symbiont in soritid foraminiferan
Cyclorbiculina compressa and also Sorites marginalis,
another soritid foraminiferan where it is not the only
symbiont.
