Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Callithamnion is Callithamnion corymbosum (Smith) Lyngbye.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Aglaothamnion caudatum (J.Agardh) Feldmann-Mazoyer.

Type locality: In oceano atlantico ad oras Galliae; (Dixon & Price 1981: 132) Lectotype: LD; Herb. Alg. Agardh 18386 (Dixon & Price 1981: 132) Notes: Other material: LD, Herb. Alg. Agardh 18390. Numerous other specimens exist (BM, TCD, etc.), distributed by J. Agardh but it would seem best to exclude these because of doubts to their provenance

Origin of Species Name
Adjective A (Latin), caudate, i.e., ending with a tail-like appendage (Sreenivasa Rao 1965).
