The type species (holotype) of the genus Chaetangium is Chaetangium ornatum (Linnaeus) Kützing.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Adelophycus corneus (J.Agardh) Kraft.

Adjective (Latin), horny, hard and close-textured but not brittle (Stearn 1973).
