The type species (holotype) of the genus Rhodymenia is Rhodymenia palmetta (Stackhouse) Greville.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Sarcodia montagneana (J.D.Hooker & Harvey) J.Agardh

Type locality: Bay of Islands, New Zealand (Silva & al. 1996: 320). Lectotype (cystocarpic specimen): David Lyall; September (Antarctic Expedition of the Erebus and Terror 1839-1843); BM BM001032008 (Rodriguez-Prieto et al. 2011: 156, fig. 2). Notes: Lectotype designated by Rodriguez-Prieto et al. (2011).
