The type species (lectotype) of the genus Porphyra is Porphyra purpurea (Roth) C.Agardh.

Yoshida; 26 August 2003; 6 m depth; SAP; 105477 (Kikuchi & al. 2010: 347) Notes: Holotype living culture: UM-MM1; isotype: CMNH (Herbarium of Coastal Branch of Natural History Museum and Institute, Chiba).
