The type species (lectotype) of the genus Chara is Chara vulgaris Linnaeus.

Type locality: "Svalbard, Norway; the Trollkjeldane (Troll Springs) in Bockfiorden, the 'cold' spring"; (Langangen 2000: 148) Holotype (spermatangial and zygosporangial): 28 August 1992; O; (Langangen 2000: 148) Notes: "Additional specimens from the same collection and from 16 August 1993 have also been examined."

Origin of Species Name
Participle (Latin), becoming white; applied to plants covered with greyish-white pubescence.

General Environment
This is a freshwater species.

Description
The subspecies is characterized by ecorticated internodes, incomplete or lacking cortex of the branchlets, occurrence of accessory branchlets and special bulbils which is not known from C. canescens.
