This is the type species (lectotype) of the genus Litosiphon.
Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Litosiphon laminariae (Lyngbye) Harvey

Syntype localities: On Chorda filum Appin [Scotland]: Capt Carmichael. Meadfoot, Devonshire [England], Mrs Griffiths (Doty & Oguri 1956: 277). Type: TCD?
Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), very small (Stearn 1973).
No synonyms are currently included in AlgaeBase.
According to Silva et al. (1996) the taxon Asperococcus pusillus var. major apparently lies within the circumspection of this species but has not been transgerred or reduced to synonymy. Guiry (1997) suggest consulting Fletcher (197) for the synonym between Litosiphon pusillus and L. laminariae.
