Distributional note
"Chara horrida only occurs in Europe and is here probably restricted to the coastal regions of the southern and central Baltic Sea. It has been found in Denmark, Germany, Poland, Estonia, Finland and Sweden (Blümel, 2004) with the majority of its recent sites in Sweden (Blindow, 2009).
All records outside of this region are doubtful. The species is not reported from Norway (Langangen, 2007). Hollerbach and Krassavina (1983) doubt its occurrence in the Black Sea, and the vouchers seem to be lost. Recent collections from the Black Sea turned out to be tylacanthous and therefore, were determined as C. baltica (see Chap. 20). Therefore the occurrence of C. horrida in the Black Sea thus is doubtful, and records published from the region should be checked (Romanov et al., 2020). Also, recent records from Scotland (Loch Obasaraigh, North Uist, Outer Hebrides) have irregular stipulode tiers with additional stipulodes but are isostichous to tylacanthous and therefore not included inC.horrida (own data). Hy (1913) reports the species from Giseux (now Gizeux; Etang du Mur, France), an inland site; however no herbarium collection from this site is known. The same is the case for a record from Finistere (France) which is mentioned by Corillion (1975) and included in his distribution map." (Blindow & al. 2024). - (13 January 2025) - M.D. Guiry
Conservational note
"Chara horrida is assessed as RE (Regionally Extinct) in the national Red Lists of Denmark and Poland, as 1 (threatened with extinction) in Germany, as Endangered in Finland, as NT (Near-Threatened) in the Baltic Sea Red List and the Red Lists of Sweden and Estonia, and as DD (Data Deficient) in Ukraine. It is assessed as NT (Near Threatened) in the European Red List (see Chap. 9)." (Blindow & al. 2024). - (13 January 2025) - M.D. Guiry
