Type species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Caulerpa is Caulerpa prolifera (Forsskål) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Caulerpa prolifera (Forsskål) J.V.Lamouroux

Type information
Syntype localities: Mediterranean France: Villefranche-sur-Mer; Juan-les-Pins; Beaulieu (Dostál 1929: 2).

Named for G. Ollivier, who wrote the flora of the Alpes Maritimes, and who collected the orginal material of this species.

Taxonomic notes
This entity may represent small specimens of Caulerpa prolifera (Furnari, pers. comm.). Cormaci, Furnari & Alongi (2014: 230): "We agree with González & Guerra (1983: 9) in considering Caulerpa ollivieri Dostál conspecific with C. prolifera. Also Meinesz & Hesse (1991: 421) put forward some doubts on recognizing C. ollivieri as a distinct taxon." See also Verlaque & al. (2019: 185) who accept this synonymy.
