The type species (holotype) of the genus Pyropia is Pyropia californica J.Agardh.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Neopyropia moriensis (H.Ohmi) L.-E.Yang & J.Brodie.

Type Information
Type locality: Oshima Prov., Mori, Hokkaido, Japan; Type: H. Ohmi; March. 7. 1954; on Chorda filum at depth of 3-8m; Notes: Holotype: Faculty of Fisheries, Hokkaido, University. This specimen currently cannot be found in HAK (Sutherland et al. 2011: 1144).
