Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Ceramium is Ceramium virgatum Roth.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Yoneshiguea cormacii (Serio, Catra, Collodoro & Nisi) Serio.

Type locality: Lampedusa Island (Straits of Sicily), 35º29'30.43" N, 12º33'50.42" E, Italy; (Serio et al. 2011: 546) Holotype (tetrasporophyte): D. Collodoro; 17 June 2008; epizoic on the carapace of a loggerhead turtle, C. caretta; CAT; 2703 (Serio et al. 2011: 546) Notes: Paratype: CAT 2704 (collected on 31 July 2009).

Nomenclatural note
"Ceramium cormacii shows morpho-anatomical characters that agree with those proposed by Barros-Barreto, Maggs et M.A. Jaramillo in Barros-Barreto et al. (2023a) for the genus Yoneshiguea, firmly placing it in that genus. Therefore, although in absence of molecular data, the transfer of that species under the genus Yoneshiguea is here proposed."
