The type species (lectotype) of the genus Cochlodinium is Cochlodinium strangulatum (F.Schütt) F.Schütt.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Margalefidinium fulvescens (M.Iwataki, H.Kawami & Matsuoka) F.Gómez, Richlen & D.M.Anderson.
