Type species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Halymenia is Halymenia floresii (Clemente) C.Agardh.
Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Halymenia elongata C.Agardh
Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), fastigiate, with branches clustered, parallel and erect, giving a narrow elongated habit (occasionally meaning branched reaching to the same height) (Stearn 1973).
