The type species (holotype) of the genus Hystrichosphaeridium is Hystrichosphaeridium tubiferum (Ehrenberg) Deflandre.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Litosphaeridium siphonophorum (Cookson & Eisenack) R.J.Davey & G.L.Williams.
