The type species (holotype) of the genus Navicula is Navicula tripunctata (O.F.Müller) Bory.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Psammothidium papilio (D.E.Kellogg, Stuiver, T.B.Kellogg & G.H.Denton) K. Kopalová & B. Van de Vijver.
