Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Echinothamnion hystrix (Hooker f. & Harvey) Kylin.
