The type species (holotype) of the genus Mayamaea is Mayamaea atomus (Kützing) Lange-Bertalot.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Lucectorea cahabaensis (E.Morales & Manoylov) Tudesque, Chrea & C.E.Wetzel.
