The type species (lectotype) of the genus Mastocarpus is Mastocarpus mammillosus (Goodenough & Woodward) Kützing.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Chondracanthus corymbiferus (Kützing) Guiry
Type locality: In sinu Californica [Monterey, Monterey Co., California, USA; Hughey & Hommersand 2008: 143] (Kützing 1847: 24). Holotype: Dr T. Coulter; 1831-1833; L 941.27.135 (Hughey & Hommersand 2008: 143).
