The type species (lectotype) of the genus Cymbella is Cymbella cymbiformis C.Agardh.

Type locality: "M.ga Nambi (= Nambi mountain cattle burn) spring (lat N46°08' 07", long E10°48'41", 1358 m asl, Adamello-Brenta Natural Park, Autonomous Province of Trento, southeastern Alps)." (Cantonati & al. 2010: 782). Holotype: M. Cantonati; 9 November 2005; TR Code cLIM007 DIAT617 (Cantonati & al. 2010: 782). Notes: Isotypes: BM (Accession number: BM 101397, PAS (ANSP GC 14451), and Lange-Bertalot Collection at the Senckenberg Museum (FR, Code Eu- I-204).
