Nomenclatural note
"Based on the species name Scrippsiella caponii T.Horiguchi et Pienaar (T.Horiguchi and Pienaar 1988b), Faust and Steidinger (1998) made the intended new combination, Bysmatrum caponii%u201C(Horiguchi et Pienaar) M.A.Faust et Steidinger%u201D. The name Scrippsiella caponii was proposed as a replacement forPeridinium gregarium Lombard et Capon (Lombard and Capon 1971, Horiguchi and Pienaar 1988b). Horiguchi and Pienaar (1988b) proposed this replacement name in the mistaken belief that the combination Scrippsiella gregaria was unavailable forthis species. Loeblich III etal. (1979b) had already made the new combination Scrippsiella gregaria (Lombard et Capon) Loeblich III, Sherley et Schmidt. However, they misidentified the taxon and were actually dealing with Scrippsiella hexapraecingula (Horiguchi and Chihara 1983a, see below Chiharadinium). Despite this misapplication, the new combination is legitimate and applicable to the original species of Lombard and Capon (Art. 7.3 of the ICN). Forthis reason the name S. caponii is superfluous and illegitimate (Art. 52.1) as the nameS. gregaria ought to have been adopted for the species. Therefore, Bysmatrum caponii is an illegitimate name as well. The species originally described from tide pools as Peridinium gregarium (Lombard and Capon 1971) is apparently identical with the species described here and it is also appropriate to accommodate it in the genus Bysmatrum. The correct name forthis species is Bysmatrum gregarium." (Hoppenrath & al. 2023: 87%u201388). - (11 June 2024) - M.D. Guiry
