The type species (lectotype) of the genus Amphiroa is Amphiroa tribulus (J.Ellis & Solander) J.V.Lamouroux.

Type locality: Chile: San Carlos, Patagonia; Isla Chiloé (Decaisne 1842: 124). Type: in herb. Mus. et d'Orbigny, et cl. Gay; PC (Decaisne 1842: 124).
