Type species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Pyropia is Pyropia californica J.Agardh.

Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Neopyropia parva (A.Vergés & N.Sánchez) L.-E.Yang & J.Brodie

Type information
Holotype locality: Colera, Roses (Girona, Spain) (42º24.311'N,03º9.362'E) (Sánchez et al. 2014: 917). Holotype (gametophyte COL804): N. Sánchez & A. Vergés; 19 April 2010; BM BM000701830 (Sánchez et al. 2014: 917, fig. 11A). Notes: Isotypes: LF401, F407, and GR726 deposited in HGI-A (HGI-A 15506, 15507, and 15500.

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), little, small, puny (Stearn 1973).
