Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Sargassum is Sargassum bacciferum (Turner) C.Agardh.

Type Information
Type locality: "Granate Bay, Tayrona (Tayrona National Natural Park), Caribbean Colombia." ; (Camacho & al. 2014: 122) Holotype: CBUMAG; 00529 (Camacho & al. 2014: 122) Notes: Isotype. LAF04289. The on-line version, validly published, originally designated a MICH type. The printed version, however, was changed and designated CBUMAG:ALG:00529" as the Holotype (p. 106). This specimen was originally accessioned as MICH 1210567, but the specimen was transferred to CBUMAG as ALG 00529 (M.J. Wynne, pers.comm. 31 January 2015) so that the designation in the on-line version is valid as published except that the location has changed.
