The type species (holotype) of the genus Rhodymenia is Rhodymenia palmetta (Stackhouse) Greville.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Palmaria decipiens (Reinsch) R.W.Ricker.

Participle B (Latin), deceiving (used of a species closely resembling another) (Stearn 1973).
